- 2 cups cooked ham or one ham bone with some meat on it
- 3 ribs celery diced
- 2 medium carrots diced
- 1 medium onion diced
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 5 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup water
- salt to taste
Instructions
- In the slow cooker, combine the rinsed split peas, celery, carrots, onion, dried thyme, bay leaves, and black pepper.
- Pour in the chicken broth and water, stirring to mix the ingredients well.
- Cover the slow cooker and cook on high for 4-5 hours or on low for 8 hours.
- After cooking, remove the bay leaves and discard the ham bone if used. Adjust seasoning with salt as needed.
Notes
For an extra flavor kick, try adding a splash of vinegar before serving.
This soup freezes well, so consider making a larger batch for quick meals later.
If you prefer a thicker soup, blend a portion of the soup before serving.
