Description

This Cottage Pie is a hearty dish featuring a savory ground beef filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes. Ideal for a quick and comforting meal, it combines simple ingredients for a flavor-packed experience that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups frozen mixed vegetables peas, carrots, corn
  • 4-6 cups prepared mashed potatoes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally for 8 to 10 minutes until thoroughly cooked, then drain.
  3. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, add the diced onion, and cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture and stir well, cooking for 2 minutes.
  6. Gradually stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, thyme, salt, pepper, and paprika. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly.
  7. Return the beef to the skillet, then add the frozen mixed vegetables. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 to 8 minutes until the mixture thickens, seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.
  8. Spoon the beef mixture into an ungreased 13×9 inch baking dish, then spread the prepared mashed potatoes evenly over the top, sprinkling cheese if desired.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until the potatoes are golden brown and the beef mixture is bubbling around the edges.

Notes

Feel free to swap in your favorite vegetables or add cheese for a richer flavor.
For a lighter version, you can use ground turkey instead of beef.
Ensure to season your beef mixture to taste for the best flavor.
